7 Ways to Spread Kindness

by | Nov 13, 2024

World Kindness Day! The day we all pretend to be decent human beings for a hot minute before going back to our regularly scheduled programming of eye-rolling and passive-aggressive sighs.

Fine, I’ll try to channel a bit of my inner sunshine for this one. Let’s see if we can crank up the kindness dial, just for a day, without causing anyone to break out in a rash.

Here’s a World Kindness Day game plan that won’t make you want to hide under your bed:

1. Start with a Smile (Even if it Hurts):

Let’s kick this special day off with the universal sign of non-hostility: the smile. I know, it might feel like a lot of work for your facial muscles, but go on, try to show those pearly whites to a stranger. You’ll either make their day or confuse them into thinking you’re up to something. Either way, mission accomplished.

2. Compliment Bombing:

Not the actual bombing, relax. Just go around throwing compliments like confetti. “Nice shoes!” “Love your laugh!” “Wow, that hair looks like you actually brushed it today!” See? Simple. Scatter those good vibes like you’re feeding the pigeons.

3. Do a Random Act of Kindness:

Grab a stranger’s coffee, throw down a hefty tip, or act like you give a damn about that mind-numbing story your coworker won’t shut up about. Just remember, it’s all about spreading the illusion of kindness, not how sincere you actually are. Think of it as performance art.

4. Donate Without Expecting Praise:

You want to really blow some minds? Donate to a cause without posting about it on social media. I know, shocking. Do it anonymously. Feel the warmth of your own silent smugness. And when no one likes or comments on your good deed because they don’t know about it, enjoy the peace that comes from not needing external validation.

5. Listen Without Interrupting:

I know, it’s a big ask. But just this once, try letting someone finish their sentence before jumping in with your brilliant thoughts. It’s a rare form of kindness these days, like finding a customer service line that doesn’t put you on hold for half an hour. Give it a go. You might even learn something… like patience.

6. Be Kind to Yourself:

You didn’t think I’d forget about you, did you? Take a moment to be kind to that chaotic mess you see in the mirror every morning. Cut yourself some slack, take a nap, eat that cookie without counting the calories. Self-kindness is the root of all the other nonsense we try to do. You can’t pour from an empty cup. So fill that cup with whatever makes you smile.

7. Spread the Word:

Maybe even organize a little something at work or school. A “Kindness Jar,” where people write down kind things others did for them. Or put up a wall where people can leave sticky notes of encouragement. Let’s make it look like Pinterest threw up all over the place. People love that stuff.

There you have it. Seven ways to spread kindness on World Kindness Day without losing your soul to forced cheerfulness. Who knows, maybe you’ll find this kindness thing isn’t all that bad. But don’t worry, there’s always tomorrow to go back to your natural state of low-key cynicism. Happy World Kindness Day, you beautiful, begrudging beacon of light!

About Rude Yogi
After spending way too long watching stupid people do stupid things, I have finally caved and started a blog to ramble about life’s endless parade of annoyances. All in all, I am just another disgruntled soul trying to make sense of this mess we call life. I'm not here to help you find your inner peace; I’m here to point out how laughably futile your quest for it is. Namaste.
